This is the project for the July 2001 workshop. A hammer beam driveway arch of rough sawn Douglas Fir. This archway is for the Buckhorn Mountain Lodge near the Rogue river's Hellsgate canyon near Grants Pass, Oregon. This should create an impressive entrance to the property.

The workshop went well. The weather was good, although a little hot. The timing worked out just right as we finished on a long last day.

Driveway arch:
12" x 12" posts
12" x 12" collar tie
8" x 10" hammer beams
8" x 8" hammer posts
6" x 10" rafters
14" long x 1" diameter maple pegs
Dimensions:
22' wide inside of posts
31' wide overall
12' to collar tie
16' to collar tie with foundation walls.

Cooper getting a little chain mortiser instruction.

Cooper making braces.

Lynn with the power saw. The very picture of confidence and grace. Everyone is welcome to lend a hand. Let each participate as they are able.

Willis trying his hand at carving pendents. He did very well for his first try. Be careful with what you are good at, you might find yourself doing more.

Mark and Willis on the chain saw. An extra handle and guard are bolted to end of saw bar. This allowed for the lines on both sides of the timber to be followed during the cut. This gave very nice results with minimum time and effort. This is the 12" x 12" collar tie being cut down.

A little clean up after the chain saw. Yes, even the instructor came out of the shade long enough to do a little work.

Cooper drilling for pegs.

Effort was made to insure things were square before drilling and pegging.

Archway standing.
Awaiting roofing and finishing touches on foundation.
