Murray Timber Framing workshops

are a hands-on experience for students of all skill levels.

Students will take part in the creating of an actual home, barn, gazebo, carport, shed or playhouse. These frames are sold as “student build” to the public.

Instruction is offered in both American and English timber framing techniques to individuals and families.

The goal of Murray Timber Framing workshops is:

To provide a fun, safe, educational environment for teaching timber framing to individuals and families.

Students come for many reasons:

Student requirements:

Workshop Projects:

During each workshop an effort is made to expose the students to as much of the timber framing process as possible. Regrettably we can not guarantee exposure to every aspect of timber framing in one short week. Students work on the project at hand and carry it as far as possible. Where the schedule allows, a raising is part of the workshop.

Instructors:

Mark Olson is the primary instructor for Murray Timber Framing. Mark is a mechanical engineer who has been drawn to timber framing. Mark has trained and worked in timber frame shops in eastern and western USA, Denmark and England. He learned the square rule method of layout in America and the scribe rule method of layout in Europe. Hands-on participation in projects from design through to raising with diverse groups of people has given him some insight into this process we call timber framing. "Knowing different ways of doing something gives a person flexibility to choose the technique that works best for the job at hand." Over the years he has instructed several hundred students and apprentices.
