This was a Timber Framer's Guild project done in 2001. The project was a roof with valley systems at the high school in Huffman, Texas. This is used as a roofed area for bus pickup and drop-off. The weather was good, the people very nice and hospitable, the area beautiful and the project interesting. A good time was had by all.
Some of the high school students had worked with an instructor to cut the simple joinery. The workshop was to teach adults to cut the compound joinery, valley rafters and jack rafters. The timing worked out perfectly as the raising was completed on the last day.
The timber framing program at the high school is a great idea. Some students got to help build part of their school. It is an experience they will keep for a life time.

Curtis giving instruction. John giving instruction. The valley
systems were laid out full size on the floor. All of the
angles were found from the lay out. Setting rafters. Using a fork lift for the heavy
lifting. The important thing about supervising
is to have something to lean on. Some high school students took turns
helping with the raising. Groups of high school students were
shown the job site during the raising. A pretty good fit. A job well done.
